SHARING MY STORY | With A Stranger | Tami Schmidt
Have you ever felt at ease by talking to a stranger on an airplane or sitting on a park bench while your kids are playing? Sometimes you talk about the weather, other times you talk about where you are going or the age of your kids. Either way it’s a surface conversation there to pass the time. I am not sure when I made the shift but there was a day when I started believing that everything happens for a reason and that there were no coincidences. I also felt this tug to be intentional with the time I am given with a stranger. Who was I to care what they thought of me? They may never see me again, but what if I could make a difference today?
I remember one day I was waiting for the Sounder to take it in to Seattle and my kids were running around, it was freezing outside and the train was late. I started talking to this young woman about the weather because it was so cold. We started talking about where we were going and she was headed to Burien to an interview. She was going to be late but I was helping her determine if she could get off the train and get on the light rail and make it on time. Long story short she was a web developer helping a non-profit. She was here on a Visa and questioning the direction in her life. She showed me her personal website and she was ridiculously talented.
I shared with her part of my story. You know how we all have the 2 min, 5 min and 20 min version. I shared with her the 2 minute version that day and it ended it with an invite for coffee later that week.
When we had coffee she asked me how my faith was so strong and I shared with her the rest of my story. I explained to her that God wastes no experiences and I shared with her Romans 8:28 (NIV):
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.
Turns out when I mentioned Calvary as part of my story, she had been attending with her sister for a couple months. She ended up helping us with our website in an area we were struggling with at the time. Who would have thought that sharing our stories would have helped both of us. . . God knew.
Daniel 4:2 (NIV)
2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.
